Mangroves are the nurseries of the sea

Many ocean species nest or give birth among mangroves, including manatees, seabirds, sharks, corals, shellfish, crustaceans and countless kinds of fish. Young sea animals grow up in that shelter until they are ready for the reef or the open ocean. Because they are home to so many species’ young, mangroves are known as the nurseries of the sea, and they are one of the greatest contributors to the ocean’s biodiversity.

These plants are also closely tied to the future of fisheries and to global food security. A great deal of the seafood we eat, including grouper, red drum, snapper and shellfish, starts life among mangroves. Many of the world’s fish catches depend on mangrove forests, directly or indirectly.
