It is easy to think of sea stars as the ocean’s ornaments. They look delicate, and they are calming to watch, but they are also among the stranger residents of the sea. Sea stars are keen predators with neither a brain nor blood. They can sense light with their arms, regrow lost body parts, and digest their prey outside their bodies. They are now helping scientists understand how long plastic has been in the ocean.

Plastics were only mass-produced from the 1940s and 1950s. When researchers examined sea stars collected between 1976 and 2015, they expected the older specimens to hold less plastic. They found similar amounts of microplastic in all of them, which suggests ocean plastic became a problem much earlier than previously thought.
